The Comptroller-General of Customs, Wale Adeniyi, has reaffirmed his commitment to national sports development, pledging support for Team Nigeria’s preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games following his unveiling as one of the country’s official ambassadors.

The announcement, made on April 1, 2026, by the National Sports Commission, forms part of a broader strategy to mobilise nationwide support for the Games by assembling a diverse group of stakeholders, including administrators, elite athletes, and institutional leaders.

Adeniyi’s inclusion in the ambassadorial team underscores the growing role of public institutions such as the Nigeria Customs Service in advancing the country’s sporting ambitions on the global stage. It also reflects efforts to strengthen collaboration between government agencies and the sports sector.

The ambassadorial team features seasoned sports administrators, including Saleh Ahmadu, Amos Adamu, Patrick Ekeji, Alhassan Yakmut, and Gbenga Elegbeleye, all of whom bring decades of leadership experience and institutional knowledge.

Also enlisted are accomplished athletes such as Daniel Igali and Blessing Oborodudu, alongside private-sector stakeholders. This blend of administrative expertise and athlete representation is designed to promote credibility, inclusivity, and a performance-driven approach to Nigeria’s preparations.

Speaking on the development, Adeniyi described sports as a powerful platform for national unity, youth empowerment, and international recognition. He emphasised the need to build a strong support system around athletes to ensure optimal performance at the Games.

“The success of Team Nigeria will depend not only on the athletes but on the strength of the support system around them. This ambassadorial initiative reflects a shared responsibility and a step in the right direction,” he said.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games, scheduled to take place in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, 2026, will feature athletes from across the Commonwealth competing in a streamlined lineup of sports, including athletics, swimming, boxing, cycling, and gymnastics, with full integration of para-sports.

With momentum building ahead of the Games, Adeniyi’s endorsement signals renewed institutional backing for Team Nigeria, reinforcing confidence in the country’s pursuit of excellence on the global sporting stage.
