FRSC advises motorists to embrace safer driving to reduce road crashes

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised motorists to embrace a safer road culture in order to reduce accident on the highways.

The FRSC Gbongan Unit Commander, Dr Jude Odinfono, gave the advice during the presentation of awards and the unit’s 13th annual anniversary on Thursday in Gbongan, Osun.

Odinfono said that safer road culture can be achieved through driver’s habit, attitude, behaviour and practice to road usage.

He said that neglecting such safer culture by motorists through disregard to traffic laws would lead to more carnages on the highways.

“We need to reflect on the culture and values that govern the safety laws on our roads, and we must embrace such laws to avoid any form of accident.

“The need for responsible and defensive driving, empathy, discipline and shared responsibilities becomes paramount,” Odinfono said.

According to him, the road safer culture must reflect in the habits of commercial drivers and other road users by driving responsibly through respect for lives and safety laws.

The commander commended the true patriotism and impactful volunteerism of the special marshals in Gbongan while making the road safer for users.

He further commended the awardees for their dedication to restoring order on highways and also strengthening safety campaigns across the state.

“I want you to see your award as a symbol of sacrifice and true services to humanity which will continue to inspire others who are also part of the marshals or not.

“Also, I urge you to expand your volunteer base, strengthened partnership and engaging the next generation through establishment of road safety clubs in schools,” he stated.

Odinfono, however, said building a safer road culture is a journey for sustained services to the nation at large, adding that every road users must practically embraced such practices.

In his remarks, the Osun Special Marshal Coordinator, Mr Hezekiah Aluko, commended the Gbongan unit command for its roles in ensuring safety of lives and property.

“The roles of special marshals cannot be overemphasised looking at their true dedication to saving lives across the state.

“Today’s awardees have proven themselves worthy enough due to their sacrificial roles and such should be emulated by other marshals,” he added.

According to him, tackling road accidents require a collective efforts of all stakeholders through sensitisation campaign and collective efforts.
