Four privately owned clubs, Ranchers Bees, Sporting Lagos, Doma United, and Inter Lagos, have earned historic promotion to the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League season, marking the first time four non-government-backed teams will rise from the Nigeria National League together.

The development signals a potential shift in Nigerian club football, long dominated by state-funded teams, toward private investment, improved competition, and talent development.

Leading the charge is Ranchers Bees, who topped their NNL conference in their debut season. The Kaduna-based side, owned by Super Eagles and Valencia CF striker Sadiq Umar, overcame early infrastructure setbacks in Kaduna before relocating operations to Minna, where over ₦20 million was invested to upgrade facilities.

The promotion caps a dramatic turnaround for the historic club, which had fallen into decline before Umar’s acquisition and heavy investment.

Announcing the feat on Wednesday, Hon. Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, Member representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency, described the promotion as “a rebirth of a legacy, the reward for belief and the beginning of a new chapter.”

“Despite the challenges associated with the growth of Nigeria’s sports industry, we have collectively strived to elevate a historic institution while providing a more positive alternative for young people,” El-Rufai posted on X.

He said the achievement reflects efforts to steer youth away from “the unemployment trap that leads to thuggery, banditry, cybercrimes and other nefarious activities” by encouraging ventures into sports and entrepreneurship.

El-Rufai credited the club’s management under President Nura Mohammed, Kaduna FA Chairman Faisal Abdullahi, and “majority owner, a gentleman, a compassionate leader, a marvellous football player and a patriotic Nigerian, Sadiq Umar.”

“Personally, sports were the only area I had yet to touch. I am proud to say we have now. It is fulfilling,” he added, noting he would meet the team in the coming days for “Jika Hanta” celebrations.

The promotion of Ranchers Bees alongside two Lagos sides, Sporting Lagos and Inter Lagos, plus Doma United, brings fresh private capital into the NPFL. Stakeholders say the influx could raise standards in player welfare, facilities, and commercial appeal.

Football analyst MikeThePundit confirmed the four promoted teams on X, posting: “🚨OFFICIAL: The four promoted teams for the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League season are now confirmed; Ranchers Bees, Sporting Lagos, Doma Utd, Inter Lagos.”

While the promotions have been celebrated, observers note that facility challenges persist across the lower leagues. Ranchers Bees’ initial struggles in Kaduna and subsequent investment in Minna underscore the infrastructure gaps private owners still face.

Still, for talents in Kaduna and beyond, the club’s rise offers renewed hope. As one fan put it: the talents in Kaduna should be dancing makossa now.
