In a significant move to enhance public trust, the Force Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, has urged the media to collaborate more closely with the Police.
Hundeyin made this appeal during a recent visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, where he emphasized the critical role of the press in national security.
Force PRO explained that without the media’s support, his job as a police spokesperson would be difficult.
He stressed that negative stories can significantly erode public confidence, which in turn hampers police operations.
“Policing relies heavily on information,” he stated, noting that when the public loses trust, they stop providing crucial tips and shared intelligence.
He clarified that his message wasn’t about controlling the press, but about fostering balanced and responsible reporting to strengthen both the police and the nation.
In return, he promised to act quickly and fairly on any issues journalists face, particularly with police officers, to ensure their work is not impeded.
Comrade Grace Ike, the NUJ FCT Chairman, welcomed Hundeyin’s visit, calling it a demonstration of the police’s commitment to open dialogue.
She affirmed the NUJ FCT Council’s readiness to work with the police, stating, “We are ready to partner with you.”
Comrade Ike highlighted that the relationship between the two institutions must be built on trust and cooperation to combat misinformation and promote responsible reporting.
She also underscored the NUJ’s firm stance against any form of harassment or intimidation of journalists, reiterating that press freedom is a fundamental right.
Comrade Ike and other council members, including Secretary Comrade Jide Oyekunle, welcomed Hundeyin warmly.
