Mrs Omope Adedeji, Chairman of Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA), has ordered immediate reconstruction of collapsed culverts to permanently tackle recurring flooding across the area.
Adedeji gave the directive on Saturday while leading the council’s monthly environmental sanitation across the LCDA.
The newsmen report that the inspection covered Orimogunje, Opeloyeru; Adeleke; Ososa Avenue; Ososa Lane; Ifelodun Junction; Toluwalase; Ikija; Seriki and Odunsi streets, where the chairman assessed environmental conditions.
She said that the directive reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to a cleaner, healthier and flood-free Bariga.
Adedeji said that environmental cleanliness remained one of the cornerstones of her administration.
She said that an on-the-spot assessment of the flood-prone Ekimogun/Adetoke axis showed that a collapsed culvert was responsible for the recurring flooding in the area.
The chairman urged residents to dispose of waste properly, avoid dumping refuse in drainage channels and support government efforts to make Bariga one of the cleanest and safest communities in Lagos State.
She said that she had directed the Supervisor for Works and the council’s engineer to begin plans for the reconstruction of the culvert and provide a lasting engineering solution to the flooding.
Adedeji also directed the council’s sanitary officers to intensify refuse evacuation and desilt drainage channels in affected communities to ensure free flow of stormwater and prevent future flooding.
She said that all identified environmental hazards would receive immediate attention, and issues affecting residents’ well-being would not be ignored.
The chairman, alongside the Vice Chairman, Mr Babatunde Adesida, personally participated in clearing refuse at Ifelodun Junction and Ososa Lane, encouraging residents to join the sanitation.
The exercise also featured members of the legislative arm, led by the Leader of the House, Mr Wasiu Balogun, councillors, members of the executive council and the management team.
The leadership and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Bariga also participated in the cleanup.
Speaking with newsmen, the Bariga NURTW Chairman, Mr Dayo Odutola (Olomu), pledged the union’s support for the council’s environmental sanitation programmes.
