The recent flood prediction issued by the Federal Ministry of Environment once again beckons the question of the level of preparedness of Osun State.
With communities such as Ilesa, Iragbiji, Osogbo, and Otan Ayegbaju identified as high-risk zones, the alert serves as a critical call to action for both the government and the citizenry.
In response to the federal warnings, the Osun State Government has outlined strategic steps to mitigate potential disasters.
The Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Mayowa Adejoorin, confirmed that proactive measures have already been activated across the state. These efforts include intensified public awareness campaigns designed to discourage improper waste disposal and warn residents against dumping refuse in drainage channels, a practice identified as a primary contributor to urban flooding.
According to Adejoorin, the state has prioritized the constant desilting of drainages to prevent blockages and ensure the unobstructed flow of water.
He noted that consistent intervention and adequate funding over the past three years have successfully prevented serious flooding incidents in the state.
However, the current alert presents a fresh test of the state’s readiness. Success will depend on the swift execution of drainage clearing, robust emergency planning, and the sustained cooperation of the public.
Residents are urged to adopt responsible environmental habits, adhere to official guidelines, and collaborate with authorities throughout the rainy season to safeguard lives and property.
