In a renewed effort to safeguard critical power assets and bolster energy security, the Federal Government has announced plans to establish a specialized joint taskforce dedicated to protecting power infrastructure across the country.
The decision followed a meeting on Tuesday between the Minister of Power, Engr. Joseph Tegbe, and the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
Leading a delegation that included the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary and senior management officials, Minister Tegbe highlighted that the widespread vandalism of electrical installations poses a severe threat to the sector’s ongoing reforms and overall stability.
He commended the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force under IGP Disu and called for intensified surveillance and tighter collaboration to curb equipment theft and sabotage.
Responding, IGP Disu reassured the Minister of the Force’s commitment to defending critical national assets.
He pledged full support for setting up the dedicated protection taskforce, emphasizing that the Police would aggressively track down, arrest, and prosecute power sector vandals and criminals.
The inter-agency initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at building a resilient, secure, and reliable national grid through enhanced security measures.
