The federal government has announced plans to establish a National Cybersecurity Coordination Council.
The move announced by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, aims to strengthen Nigeria’s collective cyber resilience through a unified, multi-stakeholder approach.
The initiative comes in response to a recent surge in coordinated cybersecurity incidents that have targeted major private institutions, public systems, and the broader services industry. These attacks, driven by organized threat actors, have underscored the urgent need for a more sophisticated and collaborative defense model to protect the nation’s growing digital ecosystem.
The proposed Council is envisioned as a non-statutory platform designed to facilitate trusted information sharing and sustained cooperation among the various institutions responsible for Nigeria’s cybersecurity posture.
“Cybersecurity is a shared national responsibility. Protecting Nigeria’s digital economy requires strong partnerships, trusted collaboration, and collective vigilance across government, industry, and civil society,” the Minister noted
To kickstart the consultative process, the Minister revealed that he has directed several key agencies includinb the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Galaxy Backbone Limited and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) to jointly establish a technical coordination secretariat.
This secretariat will be domiciled within NITDA and will operate under the strategic coordination of the Minister’s Office to ensure alignment with national priorities.
The formal commencement of stakeholder consultations is expected to take place in April 2026 during a national cybersecurity industry roundtable
