The Federal Government of Nigeria is stepping up its clean energy transition with a renewed focus on Northern Nigeria, moving to establish Katsina State as a key hub for alternative transportation.
At the center of this push is the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Electric Vehicles (EV). This initiative is driving a new wave of investments aimed at expanding access to affordable and environmentally friendly transportation solutions across the region.
The move follows high-level engagement between officials of the initiative and the Katsina State Government, where both parties agreed to accelerate a roadmap to fast-track the rollout of CNG and EV infrastructure.
Under the plan, Katsina is set to witness the development of CNG refueling stations, vehicle conversion centers, and EV charging points. A major highlight of the project is a proposed clean energy transport corridor that will link key northern routes, positioning the state as a strategic gateway for low-cost mobility.
Beyond infrastructure, the initiative places a strong emphasis on human capital development. Local youth will be trained as certified technicians, creating a specialized workforce to support Nigeria’s emerging clean transport ecosystem.
This expansion comes amid growing pressure on households and businesses following the surge in petrol prices. By promoting CNG and EV alternatives, the government aims to reduce dependence on conventional fuels while offering more sustainable transport options.
While the policy direction signals high ambition, its success will ultimately depend on execution, particularly in scaling infrastructure, ensuring a consistent gas supply, and building public trust in alternative energy systems.
Katsina now stands at the forefront of what could become a defining shift in how Northern Nigeria moves: cleaner, cheaper, and more sustainable.
