The Federal Government has abolished the 5 per cent excise duty on telecommunications services, bringing relief to millions of Nigerians who depend on mobile calls and internet data.
The National Orientation Agency (NOA) announced the development in a statement posted on X on Thursday.
The levy, introduced under former President Muhammadu Buhari, had applied to both voice calls and data services, sparking widespread criticism from telecom operators and consumer rights advocates who warned it would worsen the financial strain on citizens.
Confirming the decision, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr Aminu Maida, said President Bola Tinubu ordered the scrapping of the tax during deliberations on the newly signed Finance Act.
“This is a clear signal that the government is listening to the concerns of Nigerians and is committed to making communication more affordable,” Maida stated.
