…Reinforces pledge to justice
The Federal Government of Nigeria on Wednesday, 9 July, formally commenced Phase 7 of the Kainji Mass Trials for terrorism suspects, reaffirming its dedication to tackling terrorism and enhancing the nation’s criminal justice system.
In a statement issued by the Strategic Communications Department of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the government described the trials as a pivotal development in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, aligning with international legal standards.
During the launch ceremony, Major General Adamu Garba Laka, National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre under ONSA, said the initiative demonstrates Nigeria’s determination to pursue justice through legitimate and transparent processes.
“It is genuinely heartening to witness the Judiciary, law enforcement, legal professionals and international partners once again come together, united in responsibility and shared commitment,” Laka stated.
“These trials are a fundamental part of our national effort to maintain the rule of law while tackling terrorism and violent extremism.”
He observed that Nigeria has achieved notable progress in enhancing its legal and institutional capacity to address terrorism-related crimes. He added that recent successes in prosecution have directly addressed issues raised by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
“Without a doubt, the progress we’ve achieved through these proceedings has played a significant role in advancing Nigeria’s journey toward removal from the FATF Grey List,” he noted.
Delivering remarks on behalf of the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Major General Laka expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, and Justices of the Federal High Court for their steadfast commitment and professionalism.
He also acknowledged the support of international collaborators, investigators, legal teams, and administrative staff who have played crucial roles in the process.
Representing the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Mohammed Babadoko Abubakar, commended the unified efforts of ONSA and all stakeholders involved.
He reaffirmed the government’s firm resolve to uphold justice for both victims and accused individuals, while maintaining a consistent adherence to the rule of law and respect for human rights.
