The Federal Government has launched flagged off a massive $500 million initiative aimed at mitigating the nation’s recurring challenges of flood control, drought mitigation, and climate variability.
The programme christened Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria (SPIN) project is backed by the World Bank.
Speaking during the launch ceremony, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, unveiled the project as a cornerstone of the Pres. Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration’s strategy to harmonize environmental sustainability with economic productivity.
The Minister further emphasized that the project represents a shift toward a more proactive water resource management model, moving away from reactive disaster management toward long-term resilience and resource optimization.
Beyond energy and safety, the project is expected to serve as a significant catalyst for national food security and rural economic growth.
By drastically expanding irrigation coverage, the SPIN project aims to empower farmers to transition to multi-season cropping, thereby increasing local food production and reducing the vulnerability of the agricultural sector to erratic weather patterns.
To ensure the project’s success at the grassroots level, the Federal Government has urged various state governments to establish the necessary institutional frameworks and regulatory support required to participate in the program.
A primary objective of the SPIN initiative is the modernization and reinforcement of dam safety protocols across the federation. By integrating advanced monitoring systems and structural upgrades, the government intends to secure critical water infrastructure while simultaneously expanding the nation’s hydropower capacity.
This dual-purpose approach not only strengthens the national grid but also provides the reliable water supply necessary for large-scale agricultural transformation.
