FG dismisses claims of CNG subsidy removal, price hike

5 Sept 2025

The Federal Government, through the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG), has rejected reports alleging the withdrawal of subsidies and a rise in the pump price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

The response follows a recent media publication claiming that the cost of CNG had jumped from N230 to N450 per standard cubic metre.

In a statement issued to journalists on Thursday, PiCNG clarified that pricing decisions fall within the authority of designated regulatory agencies, and no directive or policy has been introduced by the Federal Government to alter the official price of CNG.

The organisation explained that the price adjustments announced by certain operators are entirely private-sector decisions, stressing that they are not connected to any government directive or policy shift.

“For absolute clarity: while pricing matters fall under the purview of the appropriate regulatory agencies, no directive or policy has been issued by the Federal Government to alter CNG pump prices.

“The mandate of PiCNG, as directed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is to catalyse the development of the CNG mobility market and ensure the adoption of a cheaper, cleaner, and more sustainable alternative to Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and diesel across the country,” the statement read.

PiCNG further noted that steady collaboration between relevant government institutions and private investors has significantly advanced the sector, drawing nearly one billion dollars in private-sector funding and strengthening confidence in Nigeria’s energy diversification efforts.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to keeping CNG consistently affordable, accessible, and environmentally responsible.

“Our focus remains on deepening CNG penetration nationwide and encouraging broader private sector participation to ensure availability and affordability for all,” the statement added.
