The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) and the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) have announced the commencement of the implementation of a unified Taxpayer Identification system, known as Tax ID, for all taxable persons in the country.

In a public notice issued on Monday in Abuja, the revenue agencies stated that the development is in line with Sections 6, 7, and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025.

They explained that the new system forms part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening tax administration, improving transparency, and enhancing service delivery across Nigeria’s tax ecosystem.

According to the notice, the Tax ID will serve as a single and unified identity for taxpayers, enabling seamless interaction with tax authorities at both federal and sub-national levels.

The agencies stated that the system is expected to consolidate taxpayer records, eliminate duplication, and improve the management of tax-related information nationwide.

Key benefits of the initiative include a single tax identity for all transactions and engagements, simplified tax registration, filing, and payment processes, and improved transparency in taxpayer records.

It will also ensure enhanced revenue assurance through reduced leakages and the harmonization of taxpayer data across all tiers of government.

The notice further disclosed that the new Tax ID system will replace the existing Tax Identification Number (TIN) Validation API currently being used by ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), financial institutions, and other organizations.

The revenue bodies directed organizations requiring integration or validation services related to Tax ID for individuals, enterprises, and business names to contact the Standardization and Modernization Department of the Joint Revenue Board.

Meanwhile, those seeking services for corporate entities were advised to liaise with the Tax Automation Department of the Nigeria Revenue Service for access to the Tax ID API and integration guidelines.

This marks another step in the Federal Government’s ongoing tax reform efforts aimed at expanding the tax base, improving compliance, and digitizing revenue administration systems across the country.
