The Federal Government and the Ondo State Government have initiated a field-based validation exercise for the Renewed Hope Agenda’s cash transfer program, which has seen approximately ₦9.9 billion disbursed to over 396,000 households in the state.

During a visit from the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Mr. Bernard M. Doro, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa emphasized the need for stronger synergy between federal and sub-national governments.

The Governor noted that while the South-West region has received about ₦62 billion in total, Ondo State’s beneficiaries are currently facing challenges related to National Identification Number (NIN) registration.

He directed state officials to intensify efforts to update the data of those on the social register to ensure seamless future payments.

Minister Doro revealed that the program has delivered ₦75,000 in three tranches to over nine million households nationwide.

However, he expressed concern over low public awareness of the scheme and stated that the current validation exercise involves direct, random engagement with beneficiaries in Ondo’s 18 local government areas to confirm receipt of funds and ensure accountability.

This validation exercise is a critical step in sanitizing Nigeria’s social investment architecture. Historically, cash transfer programs have been dogged by allegations of “ghost beneficiaries” and opaque distribution lists.

By moving to a field-based, direct-verification model, the Tinubu administration is attempting to prove the efficacy of the Renewed Hope Agenda to a skeptical public.

The focus on NIN registration is particularly strategic. Linking social interventions to the national identity database acts as a “digital firewall,” preventing double-dipping and ensuring that funds reach verified individuals.

For Governor Aiyedatiwa, ensuring the success of this ₦9.9 billion injection is also politically significant, as the state navigates its own economic priorities; a transparent federal safety net provides much-needed relief to the vulnerable population without further straining the state’s independent coffers.
