The State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the Federal Capital Territory has instructed all primary and secondary school teachers to commence an indefinite strike starting Monday.
This directive was formalized in a communique released after an emergency meeting held in Gwagwalada, Abuja, on Friday.
The statement, signed by State Chairman Abdullahi Shafa, State Secretary Margaret Jethro, and Publicity Secretary Ibukun Adekeye, urged teachers to stay away from classrooms until further notice.
The union also advised parents to keep their children at home while the industrial action persists, emphasizing that the strike will only be called off once all pending demands are addressed.
According to the union, this decision follows the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum, and a subsequent 28-day grace period, issued to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Although the NUT expressed gratitude to the Minister for implementing the N70,000 minimum wage and paying nine months of arrears to primary school teachers, it noted that several critical issues remain unresolved.
The council also expressed frustration over the non-disclosure of a committee report submitted in August 2025.
The committee had been tasked with harmonizing outstanding entitlements for primary school teachers to find a permanent solution to recurring industrial disputes.
Despite concluding its work months ago, the FCT Administration has yet to make the report public or implement its recommendations.
In addition to the release of the committee report, the union is demanding the removal of vacancies as a precondition for promoting classroom teachers.
They are also calling for a total review of the 2024 promotion exercise conducted by the FCT Civil Service Commission to ensure that all eligible teachers can advance without administrative hindrances.
The NUT noted that the silence from authorities regarding these legitimate welfare concerns, amidst the current economic climate, left them with no choice but to proceed with the indefinite strike.
