FCCPC summons Air Peace over unrefunded tickets, cancelled flights

17 Jun 2025

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has summoned the management of Air Peace Limited following mounting complaints from passengers regarding unrefunded ticket fares and cancelled flights.

This development was made public in a statement issued on Monday by the FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu.

According to the Commission, Air Peace’s actions may constitute breaches of Sections 130(1)(a), 130(1)(b), and 130(2)(b) of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018.

“These provisions safeguard consumers’ entitlement to timely refunds when services paid for in advance are not rendered due to the provider’s fault. The Act upholds equitable treatment and shields consumers from unjust and unreasonable conduct,” the statement explained.

In an official summons dated 13 June 2025, the FCCPC, exercising its authority under Sections 32 and 33 of the FCCPA, ordered Air Peace to appear before the Commission at its headquarters in Abuja on Monday, 23 June 2025.

The Commission also invoked Section 33(3) of the Act, which makes compliance with such directives obligatory and stipulates penalties for defiance, including fines or imprisonment.

As part of the summons, Air Peace is required to submit several key documents, including: A complaint log detailing refund requests over the last 12 months; Records of all processed refunds to date; A list of all cancelled flights across its routes within the past year; Documentation of remedial actions taken to mitigate the effects of cancelled flights on passengers.

This latest move is separate from an earlier investigation initiated by the FCCPC in December 2024, which centred on allegations of exploitative ticket pricing by Air Peace.

The Commission said the investigation examined sharp fare hikes for advance bookings, prompting the airline to file a lawsuit aimed at halting the FCCPC’s inquiry.

Despite the ongoing legal dispute, the Commission reaffirmed its determination to enforce the provisions of the FCCPA and to ensure that all consumers, including air travellers, are shielded from abusive or unfair business practices.
