A violent confrontation between local farmers and suspected herdsmen in Iru Community, within the Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State, has left the agrarian settlement in a state of high tension.
The clash, which reportedly occurred on March 5, 2022, has triggered a police investigation following allegations of widespread farm destruction, physical assault, and subsequent death threats against a resident who sought legal redress.
Iru, a predominantly agrarian community, relies almost exclusively on small-scale subsistence farming for its economic survival.
Residents report that the longstanding harmony of the area has been shattered by repeated incidents of cattle grazing on cultivated farmlands. These incursions have led to the total loss of seasonal crops, deepening the economic hardship for many households already struggling with food security.
The recent escalation allegedly began when a local farmer, Wisdom Osaretin Ufurie, confronted a group of herders over the destruction of his family’s crops.
Witnesses state that the argument quickly turned violent, resulting in a physical attack on Ufurie and his relatives.
Reports indicate that Ufurie’s elderly mother sustained severe injuries during the melee and subsequently fell into a coma, requiring urgent medical attention.
In an attempt to seek justice, Ufurie filed an official complaint at the Abudu Police Division. However, the move reportedly made him a target for further intimidation.
Community sources claim that the suspected herders, angered by the police report, issued several warning messages threatening retaliatory attacks. Fearing for his safety and the lives of his remaining family members, Ufurie has reportedly fled the community to an undisclosed location.
The Edo State Police Command has yet to release a formal statement regarding arrests, though local leadership continues to call for a permanent security presence in the area.
The situation in Iru underscores the persistent national challenge of managing competition over land resources between pastoral groups and sedentary farmers.
Community leaders are now urging the state government to intervene decisively to restore peace and prevent a complete breakdown of law and order in the local government area.
