The Inspector-General of Police has ordered the immediate transfer and disciplinary trial of ASP Nuhu Usman and his team following the fatal shooting of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State.

According to a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the incident began when operatives from the Effurun Area Command acted on a tip-off from the Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway.

Members of a transport union had reportedly apprehended a suspect, later identified as Mene Ogidi, who was allegedly attempting to transport a Beretta pistol and four rounds of live ammunition via a waybill.

While the police were in the process of taking Ogidi into custody, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, discharged his firearm.

The NPF has characterized this action as a clear violation of extant regulations, resulting in the immediate death of the suspect.

ASP Nuhu and his team are slated to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee to face summary disciplinary measures and subsequent criminal prosecution.

The Inspector-General of Police further expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and reaffirmed the Force’s zero-tolerance policy regarding extra-judicial killings and the abuse of authority.

The Police also urged the residents of Effurun and the general public to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring them that justice for the deceased will be pursued to the full extent of the law.
