Enzo Maresca exits Chelsea after 18-months tenure

Chelsea Football Club has parted ways with head coach Enzo Maresca, bringing his 18-month tenure at Stamford Bridge to an abrupt end.

The club announced the decision on Thursday following a turbulent run of form that has left the Blues trailing Premier League leaders Arsenal by 15 points.

The Italian tactician leaves the club sitting fifth in the table, having managed just one victory in his last seven league outings.

While the club statement suggested a mutual separation to get the season back on track, reports indicate growing friction between Maresca and the Chelsea hierarchy.

Tensions boiled over during Tuesday’s 2-2 draw against Bournemouth, a match Maresca missed the post-game press conference for, citing illness.

During the game, his decision to substitute star player Cole Palmer was met with audible jeers from the home supporters. The result highlighted a recurring issue for the Blues this season: the inability to hold onto leads, having dropped 13 points from winning positions at home.

Maresca’s relationship with the club appeared strained as early as mid-December, following a win over Everton, when he hinted at a lack of internal support comments he later refused to clarify.

Despite delivering the Europa Conference League and Club World Cup titles in 2025, and securing a Champions League return, recent losses to Leeds, Atalanta, and Aston Villa eroded confidence in his leadership.

Chelsea now faces a daunting schedule, beginning with a trip to Manchester City on Sunday. The club is reportedly considering Liam Rosenior, currently coaching sister club Strasbourg, as a replacement.

Other high-profile names linked to the vacancy include former Barcelona boss Xavi, Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, and Fulham’s Marco Silva.
