A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Hon. Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure strict enforcement of his executive order aimed at reducing the prices of essential medicines, medical consumables, and equipment across the country.
Oyintiloye, in a statement issued on Sunday in Osogbo, expressed concern that despite the executive order signed in June 2024 to ease the financial strain on patients, the prices of many life-saving drugs remain prohibitively high.
The former lawmaker recalled that the directive, which introduced zero tariffs, excise duties, and VAT on specified machinery, equipment, and raw materials, was intended to cut production costs and strengthen the competitiveness of local pharmaceutical manufacturers. However, he lamented that the anticipated relief for Nigerians has yet to materialise.
“Many citizens are still finding it difficult to afford essential medication,” he said, pointing out that drugs such as insulin, Metformin, and Exforge remain out of reach for large segments of the population.
Oyintiloye appealed to President Tinubu to ensure comprehensive enforcement of the order so that pharmaceutical companies can reduce prices, thereby making treatment more affordable.
“I am appealing to the President to ensure this directive is fully implemented for the benefit of all Nigerians,” he said. “There is no doubt that he is committed to providing quality healthcare, and I am optimistic that he will see this through.”
The APC stalwart also praised Tinubu for the policy initiative, describing it as proof of the President’s dedication to the welfare of Nigerians.
