The Lagos State Higher Institutional Students’ Bulletin, better known as EKOBULLETIN, has raised concerns over the death of Abdul-Rasheed Adenike Azeezat, a 300-level student of Lagos State University (LASU), who died after allegedly being struck by a reckless and overspeeding driver.

It was gathered that the student of the Department of Educational Foundations and Counselling Psychology, was crushed to death while attempting to cross the road on Saturday afternoon at about 4 p.m in Obadore area of Alimosho LGA, Lagos State.

In a statement released on Sunday and jointly signed by its Director-General, Adedeji Adekunle, and its Secretary-General, Anita Folashade Olabode, the student advocacy body described the incident as both tragic and alarming, particularly in light of what it termed “disturbing reports” suggesting possible attempts to suppress or mishandle the case.

While mourning the deceased, EKOBULLETIN warned that any compromise in the investigation would undermine public trust and erode confidence in the justice system.

“While we mourn this painful loss, we are equally troubled by circulating reports suggesting possible attempts to suppress or mishandle the case, a development that raises serious concerns about justice, accountability, and public trust,” the statement partly read.

The group further commended the leadership of the Lagos State University Students’ Union (LASUSU), particularly its president and welfare director, as well as officials of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the Education Students’ Association Nigeria LASU (ESAN-LASU), and other stakeholders for their role in mobilising peaceful protests and demanding accountability.

According to EKOBULLETIN, the response of student leaders demonstrated restraint, responsibility, and a commitment to lawful engagement despite widespread grief and outrage.

EKOBULLETIN stands firmly in solidarity with these bodies and confirms that all its envoys and functionaries will join the ongoing peaceful protests in pursuit of justice,” it added.

Beyond the immediate incident, EKOBULLETIN noted that Azeezat’s death reflects a broader pattern of unresolved cases involving students in Lagos State tertiary institutions. It cited similar incidents affecting students of Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) and Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), raising concerns about recurring lapses in accountability.

“This is not an isolated occurrence,” the group stated, adding that it would escalate the matter by formally writing to the Lagos State Government, engaging national media organisations, and collaborating with legal practitioners to explore all lawful avenues for redress.

The student body further called on the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos to urgently intervene in his capacity as Visitor to LASU, alongside the Commissioner for Justice, the Commissioner of Police, and other relevant authorities.

It urged the state government to ensure a transparent, impartial, and timely investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

EKOBULLETIN also appealed to members of the public to support calls for justice, stressing that civic engagement remains critical in holding institutions accountable.

While reaffirming its commitment to due process and constructive dialogue, the organisation warned that any confirmed attempt to obstruct justice or shield those responsible would be met with sustained advocacy, legal action, and coordinated public pressure within the ambit of the law.
