The Alawe of Ilawe-Ekiti, Oba Adebanji Ajibade Alabi Afuntade I, has passed away after 14 years on the throne of his forebears.
The spokesperson for the Alawe-in-Council, High Chief Gbenga Agbona, disclosed the monarch’s passing in a statement.
Agbona noted that the people of Ilawe-Ekiti received the news with deep sorrow and total submission to the will of God.
The late monarch was described as a promoter of peace, education, youth development, and traditional values, earning him respect far beyond his community.
According to the council, Oba Alabi distinguished himself as a custodian of culture, a unifier of his people, and a tireless advocate for the development of Ilawe-Ekiti during his reign.
The council announced traditional directives following the monarch’s passing, including the closure of the Oba’s Market and shops along major roads in parts of the town until after the final rites.
Traditional drumming and loud celebrations have also been suspended.
Residents were urged to remain peaceful and law-abiding, while security agencies were directed to ensure compliance with the directives and maintain peace in the community.
“As a royal father, Oba Alabi walked with humility and dignity, bridging the gap between tradition and modernity. His leadership strengthened the unity of Ilawe and left an indelible mark on the community he served passionately,” Agbona said.
