The Ekiti State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has sealed a residential building along Ilawe Road, Ado-Ekiti, over the indiscriminate discharge of sewage onto a public road during the evacuation of a septic tank.
The enforcement action followed complaints from residents who raised concerns over environmental pollution and the public health risks caused by the unlawful disposal of waste.
Leading the inspection and enforcement exercise, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Erelu Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe, condemned the act.
She described it as a serious environmental violation capable of endangering lives and contaminating the surrounding community.
She warned that the state government would not tolerate practices that threaten public health or undermine environmental sanitation standards.
“The state government will not tolerate any practice capable of endangering the health and wellbeing of citizens or causing environmental pollution in residential communities,” the Commissioner stated.
Aluko-Ajisafe further stressed the need for residents, property owners, and sewage evacuation operators to strictly comply with environmental regulations guiding waste disposal and sanitation practices.
Officials who accompanied the commissioner included the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Sunday Omoya; General Manager of the State Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), Mr. Olukayode Adumo; General Manager of the Ekiti State Waste Management Authority, Engr. Tawose Adekunle; Director of Environmental Health and Sanitation, San. Ayodele Aluko; and several environmental health officers.
The affected property has been sealed pending compliance with environmental safety and sanitation requirements, while further investigations and regulatory actions are expected to follow.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing environmental laws and safeguarding public health across Ekiti State.
