…Urges officers to uphold professionalism, discipline in public interactions
By Idowu Adebomi, Ado Ekiti
The Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, Mr. Joseph Eribo, has delivered a firm warning to officers in the state, urging them to refrain from actions that damage the reputation of the police force. He made it clear that any officer found guilty of misconduct will face the appropriate disciplinary measures.
Speaking at the Ado Ekiti Area Command during the closing event of his tour of the six area commands in the state, CP Eribo voiced his concerns over the increasing number of cases involving police officers engaged in extortion, brutality, and other unethical behaviour.
He urged officers to maintain discipline, uphold professionalism, and foster good relations with the public, pointing out that their conduct plays a crucial role in building trust and ensuring effective policing in the state.
“It is no longer acceptable for police officers to engage in physical confrontations, whether with members of the public or among themselves. Such actions not only damage the reputation of the force but also erode public trust,” CP Eribo remarked.
He also denounced the practice of “arrest by proxy,” stating that officers in Ekiti State are no longer permitted to make arrests on behalf of others.
The Commissioner addressed the issue of extortion, particularly in cases of illegal detention and the confiscation of motorcycles. He underscored that these actions are unethical and run contrary to the core values of the police force.
“Extortion, brutality, and indiscriminate actions like the seizure of motorcycles and unlawful detention of individuals do not reflect well on the police force. Officers must avoid these behaviours,” he added.
CP Eribo reiterated that bail is free, stressing that any officer found attempting to extort money for bail would face severe consequences.
“Bail is free in Ekiti. Any officer caught extorting money for bail will face disciplinary action. I have provided my personal contact number for anyone who encounters such issues, and I encourage citizens to report any officer who violates the law,” he said.
He criticised officers who demand exorbitant amounts, such as N50,000 or N100,000, for bail, describing these actions as disgraceful and harmful to the image of the police force.
Regarding the recent incident in Ise Emure, where a police officer was accused of stabbing an elderly man, CP Eribo reassured the public that investigations are already underway.
“We are closely monitoring the situation, and investigations are ongoing. I assure you that justice will be served if the officer is found guilty,” he concluded.
