…Says serious aspirants free to contest, denies imposition plot
…Clarifies adoption of gov is performance-driven, not party-sponsored

The Ekiti State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has stated that it is not behind the growing wave of endorsements of Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s potential second-term bid, clarifying that the ongoing declarations of support from various sectors of society are unsolicited and do not prevent other aspirants from entering the race.
The party’s Publicity Secretary, Mr Segun Dipe, made this known on Tuesday during a courtesy visit to the Secretariat of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ekiti State Council, in Ado-Ekiti.
Dipe addressed concerns raised by opposition voices, which had suggested that the recent surge of endorsements might be orchestrated to stifle internal competition. He explained that the support for the governor stemmed from his performance and achievements in office, not from any directive or influence from the party or the governor himself.
“Contrary to the impression being pushed by some opposition figures, the mass adoption of Governor Oyebanji by individuals, groups, and institutions is not stage-managed. It is a natural response to his accomplishments and his image as a worthy representative of our party,” Dipe stated.
He further noted that while the support is significant, the APC in Ekiti is not resting on its laurels and remains committed to delivering on its campaign promises.
“People may be wondering why so many are backing the governor, but that is not his doing. His track record is evidently speaking for him. That said, the field remains open to anyone who wishes to contest against him, should he formally declare interest.
“Let us not forget that constitutionally, he is entitled to a maximum of two terms, totalling eight years, if the people endorse his return. The groundswell of support should be seen as recognition of his work, not an attempt to shut others out,” he added.
Dipe also expressed gratitude to journalists in the state for their professionalism and responsible reporting, urging continued commitment to balanced journalism.
“We are not asking for favourable coverage, only that reports are fair. It is important that all sides of a story are heard. Too often, when the opposition speaks, it is treated as news, but when the ruling party comments, it is dismissed as public relations,” he remarked.
On party affairs, Dipe disclosed that the APC’s membership drive remains a priority, even as a ruling party, and assured that efforts to strengthen the party’s grassroots base are ongoing.
Addressing the tenure of the current state executive, he confirmed that the leadership, which came into office in 2021, is due to conclude its term this year. However, he noted that any decision regarding transition will be made by the national leadership of the party.
“No serious political party would want to change the goalposts midway through the game,” Dipe concluded.
