Eid-el-Kabir: FG approves 50% rail discount for travelers

26 May 2026

The Federal Government has announced a fifty percent reduction in train fares across all passenger services operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation to ease the financial burden on citizens traveling for the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir festivities.

The significant transport intervention aims to mitigate high travel costs and ensure smoother transit for thousands of Nigerians commuting to celebrate the annual festival with their families.

The directive comes amid targeted regional logistics expansions, including an increase in daily schedules on highly congested corridors like the Lagos-to-Ibadan route to comfortably manage the anticipated holiday passenger surge.

Acknowledging the financial pressures often associated with seasonal travel, authorities indicated that the half-priced ticket initiative is designed to offer practical economic relief across the national rail network.

This development follows appeals from public stakeholders and civil advocacy groups urging the government to extend transit subsidies during major Islamic holidays, mirroring past transport interventions implemented during similar national celebrations.

To complement the fare reduction, the railway corporation has temporarily modified its operational timetables, boosting train frequencies on key routes before reverting to standard schedules immediately after the holidays.

Security and ticketing protocols have also been heightened across various terminals to ensure an efficient, orderly, and hitch-free travel window for the holidaying public.
