Egbetokun reviews crime fight, mandates intensified patrols nationwide

25 Sept 2025

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, on Tuesday convened a Strategic Conference with senior police officers at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, where he unveiled a two-month operational scorecard and directed commanders to heighten visibility policing across the country as the year winds down.

The meeting, held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Hall, brought together Assistant Inspectors-General (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs) for performance review, operational planning, and strategic recalibration.

Egbetokun commended improvements in command posture, tactical response, and supervisory presence since the last conference in July, noting that such gains had boosted public confidence and improved crime-fighting outcomes. He, however, warned that the Force continues to face hybrid security threats requiring intelligence-led policing, stronger coordination, and visible leadership.

Presenting the Force’s scorecard between July 31 and September 23, 2025, the IGP disclosed that police operatives arrested 4,383 suspects nationwide for serious offences. The breakdown includes 481 armed robbery suspects, 260 kidnappers, 371 murder or culpable homicide suspects, 161 for unlawful possession of firearms, 322 for rape, and 375 cultists. Another 2,413 were held for various crimes.

Within the same period, police recovered 716 assorted firearms, 21,238 rounds of ammunition, and 212 vehicles, while 1,138 kidnapped victims were rescued.

Looking ahead, Egbetokun directed zonal and state commands to activate multi-layered visibility policing frameworks, strengthen community engagement, and step up patrols along highways, feeder routes, and forest corridors. He particularly emphasized proactive measures during the “Ember Months,” a period historically associated with increased criminal activity.

The conference ended with a collective commitment by senior officers to sustain momentum in crime prevention and law enforcement through the final quarter of the year.
