The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 31 suspected internet fraudsters during a sting operation at a “cybercrime academy” located in Becki Estate, Karu, within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The operation, conducted on Thursday, April 9, 2026, led to the apprehension of the suspects, including two alleged kingpins and several trainees who were reportedly undergoing tutorials in internet fraud at the facility. Items recovered at the scene include 18 laptop computers, mobile phones, and various electronic gadgets believed to be used for fraudulent activities.
Preliminary investigations by the commission revealed a disturbing recruitment pattern. Some of the trainees were allegedly lured from Benue State with promises of legitimate job opportunities. However, upon arrival at the Karu facility, they were instead provided with communication devices and software to begin training in cybercrime.
Further findings indicated that the recruits were kept in a state of confinement within the premises. Their movements were strictly restricted, and their mobile phones were confiscated to cut off communication with the outside world. The EFCC also disclosed that the trainees were reportedly subjected to corporal punishment and physical assault if they were deemed non-compliant with the “academy’s” rules.
The anti-graft agency stated that the suspects will be charged in court following the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
