The Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested three suspects, including a 51 year old father of ten, over their alleged involvement in the circulation of counterfeit foreign currencies.
The suspects Akilu Salisu, an indigene of Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, Umar Mikailu Shuaibu, a self acclaimed cleric from Kafor Wambari area of Kano State, and Salisu Nura from Garki Local Government Area of Jigawa State were apprehended in Ilorin, Kwara State.
According to preliminary investigations by the anti-graft agency, the suspects were allegedly involved in a syndicate responsible for circulating fake foreign currencies, including United States Dollars and Pounds Sterling.
Reports revealed that the counterfeit currencies were meant to be delivered to Shuaibu, while Salisu was identified as the final recipient in the distribution chain.
The EFCC disclosed that investigations are ongoing to unravel the full details of the operation and identify other possible accomplices linked to the syndicate.
The suspects are expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The commission reiterated its commitment to combating economic and financial crimes across the country, warning individuals involved in currency counterfeiting and related offences to desist or face the full weight of the law.
