The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has granted an electricity generation licence to Tempo Power Solutions Ltd for a five-megawatt gas-powered plant set to operate in the state.
Described as a pioneering project in terms of technological sophistication, the power plant is expected to supply electricity to both commercial and residential areas within Enugu metropolis, with scope for future expansion.
At the licence issuance ceremony held on Thursday in Enugu, the Chairman of EERC, Mr Chijioke Okonkwo, said the development reflects the increasing trust the private sector places in Governor Peter Mbah’s commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment in the state.
“This remarkable shift in our energy landscape was made possible by Governor Peter Mbah’s forward-thinking leadership,” Okonkwo noted. “Through the introduction of the Enugu State Electricity Policy 2023 and the passage of the Enugu State Electricity Law the same year, a solid foundation was laid.”
He further explained that after a six-month transitional period, regulatory control successfully shifted from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the EERC on 22 October 2024.
“Since taking over, we have issued interim licences to Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited, as well as a 10-megawatt generation licence to Fedikore Limited. We’re also actively working with stakeholders to unlock the immense potential within Enugu’s electricity sector,” he said.
Okonkwo added that EERC has already resolved over 60 customer complaints and is currently reviewing four additional licence applications, spanning generation, distribution, and electricity retail.
“There’s no question that Enugu State is now open for energy investment,” he said, encouraging investors, developers, and other key players to make the most of the abundant natural energy resources available in the state.
He also praised the governor for prioritising security, expanding the road network, and establishing a robust regulatory structure—all of which have made Enugu increasingly attractive to high-value investors and businesses.
Commending Tempo Power Solutions for moving quickly to seize the opportunities presented by the state’s favourable investment climate, Okonkwo noted that the company not only secured an offtaker but also completed the licensing process without delay.
“Their project exemplifies strategic planning and proactive engagement. The rollout of this five-megawatt power plant is a shared success for the state, the company, and the people of Enugu,” he said. “We believe Tempo Power Solutions will continue to expand its capacity as the market grows.”
In his response, the Executive Director of Tempo Power Solutions, Mr Collins Kalabare, expressed his gratitude to the state government and its citizens for their clear desire for rapid growth through stable electricity supply.
“As a company known for reliability, we are committed to providing uninterrupted power at fair, cost-reflective tariffs. Our service is designed to boost both business and residential needs while contributing to the overall economic development of the state,” Kalabare said.
He went on to commend EERC for maintaining a transparent and efficient regulatory process.
