Driver bags 2 years imprisonment for stealing cartons of tiles

A Kaduna Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, sentenced a driver, Edward Isaac, to a term of two years imprisonment for stealing cartons of  floor tiles worth N880,000.

The Magistrate, Mr Ibrahim Emmanuel, sentenced Isaac after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and stealing.

Delivering judgment, the Magistrate held that the prosection had established its case beyond reasonable doubt and also condemned the convict’s betrayal of trust.

The court held that such acts undermined workplace discipline and accountability.

He consequently, sentenced the convict to a term of two years imprisonment with hard labour and without an option of fine.

Emmanuel noted that the punishment would serve as a deterrence to others.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that a complainant one Mr David Silas of D&C Construction Firm Located at Barnawa Kaduna, reported the matter at the Police Station on Aug. 12.

Leo said that he reported the matter after he was informed of a theft at the company’s warehouse by a worker who saw the defendant and one other at large, loading 40 cartons of floor tiles into a truck without authorisation.

He said the defendant was immediately arrested while his accomplice ran away.

According to the prosecutor, during investigation, confessed that he planned selling the tiles to one Dauda Bege.

The offences contravene the provisions of the Kaduna State Penal Code 2017.
