The Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Bolaji Cecilia Dada, has warned that domestic violence and sexual abuse remain widespread social ills that threaten the peace, security, and moral fabric of communities, thriving in silence.

She observed that these crimes affect people across all ages, classes, and backgrounds, leaving behind invisible yet deeply damaging scars.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Commissioner stressed that domestic violence and sexual abuse are not private matters to be concealed behind closed doors. She described them as violations of human rights, crimes against humanity, and direct assaults on the dignity of women, children, and other vulnerable individuals.

“Domestic violence and sexual abuse thrive in silence. When victims are too afraid or ashamed to speak, perpetrators continue to harm others without consequence. That is why we must collectively say NO MORE SILENCE, NO MORE VIOLENCE,” she said.

Hon. Dada outlined the government’s commitment to protecting the vulnerable and supporting survivors. She noted that the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation continues to strengthen its Domestic and Sexual Violence Units to ensure survivors receive counselling, legal support, shelter, and economic empowerment to rebuild their lives.

The Commissioner emphasised that government action alone is insufficient. She called on communities, families, religious institutions, schools, and individuals to unite in confronting abuse, encouraging citizens to speak up when they witness violence, intervene when abuse is suspected, and support survivors seeking help.

Addressing survivors directly, Hon. Dada said, “You are not alone, you are not to blame, and your voice matters. Help is available, and we are here to walk with you on the path to healing and justice.”

She added, “Together, let us break the cycle of silence and shame. Let us build a Lagos State where every woman, every child, every person can live free from fear and violence.”

The Commissioner concluded by reiterating that domestic violence and sexual abuse must never be tolerated in society.
