The Defence Headquarters has ordered the immediate dismantling of non-essential military roadblocks and checkpoints across the country in a major security restructuring aimed at improving mobility and sharpening frontline operations.
The directive, issued on Thursday, is designed to enhance the free movement of people and goods while allowing the armed forces to refocus on tackling terrorism and banditry in affected regions.
Defence Minister, Christopher Musa, explained that police personnel and operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) will now assume control of checkpoint duties previously handled by soldiers.
He said the decision became necessary to ensure that troops are redeployed to areas where their expertise is most needed.
According to the minister, the adjustment will enable the military to prioritise offensive operations in the bush, strengthen rapid response capabilities, and improve overall national security coordination.
