Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Alia, has assured the people of Benue of his administration’s commitment to delivering more democracy dividends directly to their doorsteps.

Governor Alia made this promise on Thursday while addressing a large crowd that gathered at the Government House, Makurdi, to mark Democracy Day and show solidarity with both his administration and that of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In his speech, the Governor highlighted the resilience and sacrifices that have characterised Benue’s democratic journey over the years. He paid tribute to Nigeria’s democratic heroes, including Chief MKO Abiola, Kudirat Abiola, Gani Fawehinmi, and many others who stood for truth, justice, and freedom.

He also honoured notable Benue patriots such as the late Reverend Father Moses Adasu, a former governor of the state, and Senator Iyorchia Ayu, among others, for their roles in shaping Benue’s democratic development.

Governor Alia lauded the Buhari administration for restoring June 12 to its rightful place in the national calendar and commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for upholding democratic ideals.

The Governor went on to outline the key achievements of his administration so far. These include restoring relative peace in areas previously affected by violence and insecurity, clearing long-standing salary and pension arrears, launching agricultural empowerment initiatives, rehabilitating major roads, renovating schools, and upgrading healthcare facilities.

He further mentioned support for internally displaced persons (IDPs), the implementation of youth empowerment schemes, and the introduction of policies aimed at improving the quality of life for all Benue residents.

Looking ahead, Governor Alia revealed plans to establish agro-industrial hubs to process local produce and stimulate economic growth.

Other plans include the execution of new road infrastructure projects, support for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), promotion of women-led businesses and tech-based innovations, and the provision of health insurance coverage for every citizen in the state.

Calling for unity among all sons and daughters of Benue, the Governor urged citizens to reject division, hate, and violence and instead embrace dialogue, compassion, and hard work for the greater good of the state.

He expressed his appreciation to security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations, and ordinary citizens for their continued support of his administration.

Governor Alia reaffirmed his commitment to serving Benue with humility, integrity, and a results-driven approach. He pledged to leave the state better than he met it.

He called on all citizens to join hands in building a greater Benue and a stronger Nigeria, emphasising that democracy is a collective endeavour and that every hand is needed on deck to secure a brighter future for all.
