Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has graduated a total of 6,401 students for the 2023/2024 academic session, including 830 postgraduates.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, while delivering his address at the 17th convocation ceremony held over the weekend, announced the approval of automatic employment for the overall best graduating student, Miss Okwa Favour Oghenemine, a First-Class Mathematics graduate from the Faculty of Science who finished with a stellar Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.95.

“The employment of the best graduating student is in line with the university’s tradition of rewarding excellence,” Oborevwori said to wide applause.

The postgraduate breakdown includes 154 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, 438 Master’s degrees, and 238 Postgraduate Diplomas.

The Governor congratulated the graduands, urging them to go forth as worthy ambassadors of DELSU in character and scholarship.

Oborevwori ordered the immediate revocation of the long-abandoned Senate Building project, which has been left dormant for over 22 years.

He directed the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Nyerowho Tonukari, to initiate revocation procedures to enable the re-award of the contract to a more competent contractor.

“This building has remained a blight on the institution’s development for over two decades. The revocation will enable the state government to re-award it to a capable contractor and ensure swift completion,” the governor declared.

Prof. Samuel Asagba, Vice Chancellor of DELSU, lauded the Governor’s commitment and expressed optimism that the action would unlock infrastructural progress on campus.

He proudly announced that the university had secured 100 per cent accreditation for all its academic programmes and currently ranks 20th among over 300 Nigerian universities and 3rd among state-owned universities nationwide.

Earlier, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, General Alexander Ogomudia (rtd), also appealed to the state government to expedite the completion of abandoned and ongoing projects. He reminded the graduands of their lifelong duty to uphold the university’s reputation through excellence and integrity in their future pursuits.

The convocation ceremony underscored DELSU’s rising academic profile and the state government’s renewed push for educational development through strategic investments and youth empowerment.
