Defence Minister proposes compulsory military training for Nigerians

24 Sept 2026

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), has proposed that every Nigerian citizen should undergo military training, asserting that the rigorous experience is essential for building national resilience and appreciating the sacrifices of the armed forces.

Speaking on the African Leadership Podcast hosted by Ken Giami, the Defence Minister explained that exposing civilians to structured military routines would cultivate a deeper understanding of the physical and mental toll required to safeguard the country.

According to Musa, the demanding conditions inherent in military drills such as extreme physical exhaustion, extended sleep deprivation and hunger offer a perspective on life and endurance that cannot be replicated elsewhere.

“I can tell you for free, it will give you a different perspective about life. You will now understand what it means to stay hungry, what it means to walk in days without sleep,” Musa stated.

He emphasized that enduring such trials helps mirror the realities faced by frontline troops who march for kilometers under harsh conditions, putting their lives on the line to preserve national security.

The Minister expressed concern over public criticisms directed at security personnel, noting that a firsthand taste of military training would change civilian attitudes toward men and women in uniform.

He stressed that soldiers operate under immense pressure to ensure citizens can move freely and securely, making public empathy and mutual understanding vital for national unity.
