Data consumption hits record 4 million terabytes in three months – NCC

3 May 2026

Nigeria’s data consumption has crossed the 4 billion gigabyte threshold for the first time in a single quarter.

According to the latest figures from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the country recorded a staggering 4.06 million terabytes of data usage in the first three months of 2026.

This milestone marks a significant leap from the 3.86 million terabytes recorded in late 2025, signaling that Nigerians are integrating internet-based services into their daily lives faster than ever before.

The surge was spearheaded by a historic performance in March 2026, which became the busiest month on record for Nigerian networks.

During that month alone, usage peaked at 1.42 million terabytes averaging nearly 46,000 terabytes per day.

This rapid growth is a direct result of massive infrastructure investments by major telecom players; MTN Nigeria, Airtel, and Globacom have collectively funneled billions of dollars into subsea cables, fiber optic expansions, and thousands of new towers to keep pace with the skyrocketing demand.

This consumption shift is also being driven by a transition toward high-speed connectivity.

4G technology now anchors the majority of the nation’s digital activity, accounting for over 53% of all connections while 5G though still in its early stages at 4.2% penetration is increasingly handling heavy data loads in urban hubs like Lagos and Abuja.

Similarly, the market for fixed wireless and fiber-to-the-home services is expanding rapidly as more Nigerians seek stable, high-bandwidth connections for remote work and entertainment, with MTN Nigeria currently maintaining a dominant 80.7% share of the fixed internet sector.
