Dangote Petroleum Refinery has issued a forceful rebuttal to recent reports suggesting it imports finished Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) into Nigeria, describing the claims as a misleading distortion of its operational technicalities.
In an official statement released on Monday, the refinery clarified that while it does import intermediate feedstocks and blending components to optimize production, it does not import finished fuel for the Nigerian market.
Addressing a misrepresentation attributed to S&P Global, the refinery explained that as a world-class merchant facility, it routinely sources intermediate streams such as high-sulphur reformates and low-RON condensates.
These materials are not gasoline but are essential components that must undergo secondary processing within the refinery to meet Euro 5 market specifications.
The management emphasized that this is a standard global strategy used by advanced refining hubs in Europe and Asia to enhance operational margins and flexibility.
The refinery took a sharp turn against those promoting the narrative, characterizing them as unpatriotic and unscrupulous individuals who benefit from Nigeria’s historical dependence on fuel imports.
The company alleged that these same interests were involved in the fraudulent financing of repairs for NNPC refineries and warned that their identities and motives would soon be revealed to the public.
“These individuals will soon have their day in court,” the statement read, labeling the recent media campaign as deliberate propaganda designed to milk the national economy.
Reiterating its impact on the domestic market, the refinery noted that the only gasoline it supplies is Euro 5 compliant PMS, which has effectively ended West Africa’s reliance on low-grade, high-sulphur imports.
The management called on S&P Global and other international industry stakeholders to maintain higher levels of technical accuracy and responsibility in their reporting to avoid undermining international perceptions of Nigeria’s refining progress.
The company reaffirmed its primary mission to strengthen national energy security and foster economic transformation through its world-class operations in Lagos.
