The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit Zone C, Owerri, has intercepted a massive shipment of tramadol capsules and other prohibited pharmaceutical products valued at approximately ₦1.05 billion. The seizure occurred during a coordinated enforcement operation along the Okada/Ofosu Expressway in Benin, Edo State.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Customs Area Controller for FOU Zone C, Comptroller Bishir Balogun, revealed that the breakthrough was the result of a targeted, intelligence-driven operation. Operatives intercepted a truck suspected of carrying contraband, but the driver reportedly attempted to evade arrest after being flagged down. The suspect ultimately abandoned the vehicle and fled into a nearby forest to escape custody.

Upon conducting a thorough search of the abandoned truck, Customs officers discovered the illicit drugs carefully concealed among legitimate goods. This tactic was used by the smugglers in a deliberate attempt to bypass security checkpoints and evade detection. Comptroller Balogun confirmed that the seized consignment carries a total Duty Paid Value of ₦1.05 billion.

The Comptroller emphasized that this operation highlights the service’s unwavering commitment to disrupting the smuggling of prohibited substances that fuel drug abuse and criminal activities nationwide. He noted that substances such as tramadol and codeine pose a severe threat to public health and national security.

Warning smugglers to abandon their illegal trade, Balogun stated that the Nigeria Customs Service will continue to deploy sophisticated intelligence strategies to safeguard the country. While the seized items remain in official custody, investigations are currently ongoing to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for the illegal shipment.
