The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) has joined the global community in celebrating the International Day of Banks, an annual United Nations designated observance that underscores the crucial role banks play in promoting sustainable development, economic growth and financial inclusion.
In a statement issued by its President and Chairman of Council, Prof. Pius Deji Olanrewaju, FCIB, the institute highlighted this year’s theme, “Empowering Sustainable Development Through Finance,” describing it as a timely reminder of the importance of trust, innovation and ethical leadership in the financial sector.
According to Olanrewaju, Nigerian banks continue to demonstrate their growing role in advancing sustainable finance by supporting initiatives that generate meaningful social and economic outcomes.
He added that the sector’s strength and reliability rest firmly on professionalism and integrity.
“Today, we honor our banks, the dedicated professionals who power them, and the millions of customers whose trust sustains and strengthens our financial system,” he stated.
To deepen ethical standards within the industry, the CIBN announced plans to introduce an Annual Ethics and Professionalism Summit, which will hold every December 4.
The initiative is designed to align with the International Day of Banks and reinforce the institute’s leadership in setting and promoting ethical benchmarks across Nigeria’s financial services landscape.
As the global banking sector marks this significant day, the CIBN urged banking professionals to remain steadfast in upholding the highest levels of ethics, professionalism and service.
The institute emphasized that the actions taken today will shape the future of the nation’s financial system.
The CIBN reaffirmed its commitment to fostering professionalism, supporting sustainable finance and strengthening capacity building across the sector to ensure a stable, trusted and future-ready banking industry.
