…vows to appeal Court ruling

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that it is yet to take a formal decision on issues relating to the deadline for the submission of candidates for the 2027 general elections.
Recall that the Federal High Court recently gave a judgment stalling the deadline for the conduct of primaries for political parties.
In an interview with newsmen, the INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna explained that the commission had not convened a meeting to examine the implications of the court rulings and determine their impact on the conduct and outcome of party primaries.
Haruna was responding to questions on whether political parties would still be required to comply with the commission’s original deadline for the submission of candidates’ names.
According to him, INEC’s immediate position is to obey the court judgments while simultaneously pursuing an appeal against the decisions.
He noted that the commission remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that its actions are in line with judicial pronouncements.
The development comes amid growing interest among political parties and stakeholders preparing for the 2027 elections, as they await further clarification from the electoral body on the way forward.
