Building engineer jailed 1 year for mischief, property theft

A  Chief Magistrates’  Court in Bwari, FCT,  on Friday sentenced a 33-year-old building engineer , Martins Okoh, to one year imprisonment for mischief and theft.

Delivering judgment, Chief Magistrate Chiemena Nonye-Okoronkwo, found Okoh guilty of the offence.

Nonye-Okoronkwo convicted Okoh without an option of fine for criminal conspiracy, mischief, theft and breach of peace.

He ordered the convict to pay N15 million restitution to the complainant, Monso Johnpaul, for losses suffered.

Magistrate went further to issue an arrest warrant against co-defendant Nasiru Hassan, 25, security guard, for jumping bail and absconding from trial.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr Seidu Jibrin told the court that on Sept. 19, 2023, Okoh conspired with Hassan and others, at large and criminally trespassed into the complainant’s house  at Gbazango Extension in Kubwa. Abuja.

Jibrin said the convict destroyed sinks, plumbing accessories worth N500,000, washing machine N200,000, aluminium N1.7 million, and vehicle windscreens.

The police also said that the  convict  stole five air conditioners, a generator, two plasma TVs, three fans and other items.

The police said the convict and others acted under false pretence of executing a fake court order to cart away the complainant’s property.

He said the offence  contravened the provisions of sections l 97, 326, 287, 114.  If the penal code.

The report states that the convict was sent to Suleja correctional facility to serve his sentence .
