Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has restated his support for the removal of petrol subsidy.
Obi spoke on Monday at a conference organised by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ended the subsidy regime in 2023. But his challenger from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2027 elections, Atiku Abubakar, recently promised to reverse Tinubu’s action.
African Action Congress (AAC) candidate Omoyele Sowore was the first to promise the reversal.
After pressure from the Tinubu government, Atiku’s team said their candidate would boost local refining of petrol without subsidising fuel imports.
Obi, on his part, backed the Tinubu policy but alleged the proceeds are mismanaged. He, however, added that the mismanagement of the proceeds was not enough reason to restore fuel subsidy.
