Traffic was disrupted on Saturday morning after an empty tanker truck suffered brake failure and crashed into a coaster bus on Eko Bridge inward Apongbon, Lagos.
The accident, which occurred on the fast lane opposite the NEPA area, partially blocked the road causing heavy traffic buildup for motorists heading towards Apongbon and adjoining routes.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the tanker lost its brake before colliding with the bus which obstructed about 55 per cent of the road, slowing down movement along the busy corridor.
LASTMA officials were immediately deployed to the scene to control traffic and prevent further accidents while recovery operations commenced to remove the affected vehicles and restore free flow of traffic.
Although the collision caused significant congestion, no fatalities were reported.
The incident once again highlights the dangers posed by mechanical failures, particularly brake defects, which remain a major cause of road crashes involving heavy duty vehicles across the country.
Lastma reiterated its commitment to ensuring traffic safety across Lagos and urged vehicle owners, especially operators of articulated trucks and tankers, to carry out regular maintenance checks to prevent avoidable road accidents.
