Labour Party has called on President Bola Tinubu to take action against governors whose actions could undermine Nigeria’s democracy and constitutional rights.
The party made the call while condemning the alleged blockade the motorcade of Mr Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the NDC, on his way to Yelwata, Benue last Tuesday.
In a statement issued on Friday, Ken Asogwa, National Publicity Secretary of the party, described the incident as “shameful” and disturbing.
Asogwa said the situation would be more frightening if allegations that miscreants involved were sponsored by the Benue Government were established.
He questioned how a Reverend Father who preached morality could allegedly descend to violence, warning about similar conduct by other politicians.
According to him, LP noted that political differences must not become licences for violence, intimidation or suppression of citizens’ fundamental rights.
He stressed that the Constitution guaranteed freedom of movement to every Nigerian, regardless of tribe, political affiliation or religion.
“The Labour Party expressed concern that the Benue governor had allegedly failed to arrest criminals ravaging the state while targeting Obi during a humanitarian mission.
“We call on the authorities to protect citizens’ rights to move freely, express political opinions and participate in public activities without fear.
“Democracy depended on respect for constitutional rights, rule of law and the freedom of citizens to engage in political activities”, Asogwa stated.
The party he said, pledged to continue condemning attempts to weaponise state power against political opponents and to defend democracy and constitutional rights.
