Bala Mohammed halts APC defection plans

18 Apr 2026

The planned defection of Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has collapsed following a deadlock over a proposed power-sharing arrangement.

Addressing journalists on Saturday, April 18, 2026, the Chairman of the Turaki-led PDP faction in Bauchi, Sama’ila Burga, revealed that the APC leadership rejected a 60–40 formula for control of the party structure in the state.

Burga explained that such a formula is standard practice when a sitting governor defects, ensuring the government maintains control of the party from the ward to the state level.

“We have closed that discussion. You cannot expect a government bringing its structure from ward level to the state not to have control of the party,” Burga stated, noting that the APC’s refusal showed it was not ready to fully accommodate the state government.

The discussions reportedly involved the APC national leadership and Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, who had previously visited Bauchi to facilitate the move.

Following the breakdown of talks, Governor Mohammed and his stakeholders have formally discontinued the realignment process with the APC. Burga added that the faction is now actively exploring other political platforms that better align with their interests and the aspirations of the people of Bauchi State.
