The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has met with former Nigerian President and AU High Representative, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, to discuss key developments across the African continent.

Youssouf disclosed the meeting in a post on social media, saying the discussions focused on regional developments and other issues of continental importance.

The meeting brought together two senior figures with long-standing experience in African affairs, with discussions reportedly centred on issues affecting peace, dialogue and stability across the continent.

Youssouf commended Obasanjo for his continued engagement in efforts aimed at promoting peace and resolving conflicts through dialogue.

“The Chairperson commended President Obasanjo’s continued engagement in support of peace, dialogue and stability across the continent,” the statement said.

Obasanjo, who served as Nigeria’s president from 1999 to 2007, has remained active in continental affairs since leaving office, including through his role as an AU High Representative.

His interventions have frequently focused on conflict resolution, mediation and strengthening cooperation among African countries.

The meeting comes at a time when several parts of the continent continue to face security, political and humanitarian challenges, making regional cooperation and diplomatic engagement increasingly important.

The AU has continued to advocate dialogue and peaceful solutions to political and security crises affecting member states, while senior African statesmen such as Obasanjo have played roles in mediation efforts.

Youssouf’s meeting with the former Nigerian president also highlights the importance attached to the experience of former African leaders in addressing complex continental challenges.

Youssouf and Obasanjo exchanged views on matters of shared continental interest, with the engagement expected to contribute to ongoing discussions around peace and stability in Africa.

The meeting further underscores the role of dialogue and consultation in addressing challenges that transcend national borders.

While details of the specific regional developments discussed were not disclosed, the AU said the talks covered issues of importance to the continent.

The engagement reflects continued efforts by African leaders and institutions to strengthen peaceful cooperation and find sustainable solutions to conflicts across the region.

The AU Commission said it appreciated Obasanjo’s continued commitment to supporting peace and stability, describing his engagement as valuable to ongoing continental efforts.
