Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu over the continued captivity of pupils and teachers abducted in Oyo State.
Atiku, who is the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, accused the Federal Government of showing a lack of urgency in responding to the abduction and securing the release of the victims.
In a statement issued on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, he said the administration appeared more interested in political engagements than addressing the plight of the kidnapped schoolchildren and their teachers.
He questioned the government’s priorities, arguing that public leaders should show empathy in moments of national distress rather than engage in celebrations while victims remain in captivity.
Atiku also faulted the First Lady, saying Nigerians expected more visible advocacy and pressure for the safe return of the abducted pupils and teachers.
He criticised what he described as a continued focus on political activities, arguing that such actions send the wrong signal to families still awaiting the return of their loved ones.
The former vice president also condemned what he called extravagant displays of power by public officials amid worsening insecurity and economic hardship in the country.
He said the contrast between the suffering of affected families and public celebrations by political actors had deepened public anger and frustration.
Atiku warned that rising cases of kidnapping could further weaken public trust in government if not urgently addressed, urging stronger action from security agencies.
He called on the Federal Government to deploy all available intelligence and security resources to secure the release of the abducted victims and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
The pupils and teachers were abducted in Oyo State nearly three weeks ago, sparking continued concern over their safety and renewed calls for improved national security.
