A 36-year-old artisan, Emmanuel Temitope, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan for allegedly defaming his employer and fraudulently obtaining ₦1.8 million under false pretenses.
Temitope is facing a two-count charge of defamation and cheating. According to the prosecution, led by Cpl. Akeem Akinloye, the defendant had in April sent a voice note via WhatsApp threatening to defame the complainant, Kolawole Shoore.
The alleged defamation, the prosecution claimed, led to Shoore’s dismissal from his job and the loss of his entitlements.
Also, Temitope was accused of collecting ₦1.8 million from Shoore in March for the demolition and renovation of a building located on Liberty Road, Ibadan. However, he reportedly failed to complete the agreed-upon work.
The offences, according to Akinloye, contravene Sections 373 and 421 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
Temitope pleaded not guilty to the charges. Chief Magistrate Olabisi Ogunkanmi granted him bail in the sum of ₦750,000, with two sureties in like sum—one of whom must be a blood relative. The case was adjourned to September 4 for hearing.
